It’s week three of the high school football season and there’s a new clear-cut No. 1.

Not among the teams – Batesville (Miss.) South Panola maintains the top spot over Euless (Texas) Trinity and Sacramento (Calif.) Grant for the second straight week.

But among the states.

Florida, which looked to be down in the opening week, is proving to be a force. This week it has 14 schools in the Top 100, bettering both California (10) and Texas (8).

That’s what happens when you take three of four games in the Florida vs. Texas showcase. That’s what happens when your Top 12 teams in the state go unbeaten.

Bradenton (Fla.) Manatee leads the way at No. 7. Traditional powers Lakeland (Fla.) High (at No. 84) and Miami (Fla.) Booker T. Washington (at No. 94) join the party.

And to think, Florida was the only one of the three power states to only have one Top 10 team a week ago.

California still has Grant, but it was hurt when Long Beach (Calif.) Poly lost and fell from No. 10 to the unranked masses.

Texas still has Trinity, but it was hurt when Abilene (Texas) High lost and fell from No. 5 to No. 25.

Of course, Abilene’s loss was legitimate – it fell to Cocoa (Fla.), which jumped from No. 58 to No. 18.

With that, a look at the new Top 20 HS Football Teams.

1. South Panola
2. Trinity
3. Grant
4. Hoover
5. Camden County
6. West Monroe
7. Manatee
8. Phoebus
9. Butler
10. Hamilton
11. Doreman
12. Colerain
13. Glenville Academic Campus
14. Miami Central
15. Bingham
16. Junipero Serra

For a long time, people loved LeBron James. Totally loved him in a non-platonic way (for the most part). At the same time, Kobe Bryant has been one of the most hated players in the NBA for the past few seasons. But it is funny how a summer can change things.

Now, after LeBron’s decision and “The Decision,” more and more people dislike LeBron James. Whether they think he’s a coward, a jerk or just has a bad beard, the LeBron James train has less and less people enjoying its complimentary peanuts. And while LeBron has been busy making people angry, Kobe has been enjoying a great run that has seen him win an Olympic gold medal and two straight titles while staying out of headlines for anything bad. The tables have turned.

It’s close, and actually Kobe is more well-liked — according to Steven Levitt at Q Scores, Kobe’s positive score of 16 and negative score of 40 are close to LeBron’s scores of 14 and 39 — but people still dislike Kobe more than LeBron. All is right with the world and nothing has changed. Well, except that a whole lot of people dislike LeBron James right now. That part has changed, for sure.

Not to mention, the extent to which people dislike LeBron James is kind of amazing. They dislike him so much that it’s affecting how much they like his new teammates. As Rovell notes, both Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade have seen their positive scores fall and their negative scores rise. Makes sense, and it’s good to see that LeBron is already changing the culture of basketball in Miami.

On the other hand, after a great two year run, this proves that there’s really nothing Kobe Bryant can do that will make him well-liked to fans. It doesn’t seem like he minds that, at all, but it’s still interesting that changing teams like LeBron did kills his popularity while becoming one of the biggest winners in the NBA has had no effect on most people’s view of Kobe. I don’t think that’s a problem for the Mamba, but I do think that’s a problem for LeBron and it might be tough for him to realize that championships don’t equal adulation.

BOSTON — New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was in a two-car accident near his home at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday morning but was unhurt and attended practice later in the day at Gillette Stadium.

Brady arrived at the stadium Thursday morning and was involved in parts of meetings and a walk-through in addition to participating in the team’s practice session as the Patriots prepare for Sunday’s season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

During the 11-minute portion of afternoon practice that reporters were allowed to watch Thursday, Brady, in full uniform with pads and helmet, stretched as usual with his teammates. Then, as he usually does, he threw soft passes of 20 to 30 yards to teammates.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick told the team about the accident before practice and said Brady might be a bit late.

“He didn’t make it seem like it was anything serious,” outside linebacker Tully Banta-Cain said of Belichick’s remarks to the team. “I saw [Brady] a little while ago and he looks OK. I saw him walking in, he had a smile on his face, no abrasions. I think he’s fine. That was my first reaction.”

Added veteran tight end Alge Crumpler: “He’s here, he’s ready to go.”

Rookie tight end Rob Gronkowski said he caught a pass from Brady in the pre-practice walk-through and that it was as crisp as ever.

“We’re just all thankful he’s fine, and glad he’s back here already, and back working,” Gronkowski said.

His initial reaction was concern.

“Obviously it’s a shock, no matter who it is,” Gronkowski said. “You never want to hear information like that. We’re all thankful everyone is all right and he’s here.”

nfl tom brady car accident

The crash, at an intersection in Boston’s Back Bay area blocks from Brady’s home, knocked over a light pole and sent a passenger in the other vehicle to the hospital with injuries that were serious but not considered life-threatening, a police report said.

A police report says 21-year-old Ludgero Rodrigues was driving a Mercury Villager minivan that struck Brady’s Audi sedan.

Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles spokeswoman Ann Dufresne says the driver’s license of Rodrigues was suspended at least five times in three years. She says that includes a 180-day suspension last year after he was arrested for operating under the influence and refused to take a blood-alcohol test.

Police say Rodrigues was cited Thursday for failing to stop at a red light. Two other people in the minivan were able to exit and had no visible injuries, witnesses said.

A telephone listing for Rodrigues could not immediately be found Thursday.

Mayweather apologizes for racist tirade

Floyd Mayweather Jr. took to the Internet again on Friday, this time to apologize for a profanity-filled racist rant against Manny Pacquiao that he recorded on uStream.com Thursday.

Mayweather continued to mispronounce Pacquiao’s surname, repeatedly referring to him as “Pooch-ee-ow.” But a day after making racist and homophobic comments on uStream, Mayweather offered an apology to those who were offended.

“I do want to apologize for what happened the other night,” Mayweather said. “I want to apologize to everybody. They felt it was a racist comment that came from me. I don’t have a racist bone in my body, you know. I love everybody. Some of my guys are Muslims. Some of my guys are Jews. Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Mexicans, whites, it doesn’t matter. There is nothing but love in my heart, you know what I’m saying?

“I heard this from a few people. The only thing I want to say is, anybody who was offended by what I said the other day, I apologize as a man. I apologize. Forgive me for saying what I said. I was just having fun. I didn’t really mean it, nothing in a bad way. So let’s stay on this roller coaster ride and keep riding, baby. It’s all love.”

Prior to apologizing, Mayweather embraced two Asian women, who said they were Thai and Chinese. He asked one of them if she spoke Thai and kept asking her to “Speak some Thai.” As he embraced them, he promised them front-row tickets for a fight with Pacquiao. Representatives of each camp twice in the last nine months attempted to make a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, but were unable to finalize a deal.

Mayweather also sent condolences to his former promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, with whom he has long had a contentious relationship. The body of Arum’s 49-year-old son, John, was discovered in the Cascade Mountains in Washington state Friday. John Arum appeared to have fallen 300 feet in a hiking accident.

John Arum had been missing for several days and it’s not clear in the video whether Mayweather was aware the body had been discovered. However, he offered consoling words to Bob Arum.

“God bless Bob Arum and his whole family, because I heard that Bob Arum’s son had a bad accident,” Mayweather said. “Love to the whole Arum family.”

manny pacquiao

In the original video, he referred to Pacquiao, a native of the Philippines, as “a yellow chump,” and said “Once I stomp the midget, I’ll make that [expletive] make me a sushi roll and cook me some rice.” In addition, he said, “I’m going to cook that [expletive] with cats and dogs. Have some rice with a little barbecue dog.” He also referred to Pacquiao by using a derogatory slang term for a homosexual.
Dear Readers,

Just found this great article and i thought this is worth a share. So here it is. Enjoy!

Michael Jordan may not spend most of his time on the basketball court anymore, but he’s still answering prayers as the clock winds down. This time, His Airness is coming to the rescue of middle-school sports in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools system, donating $250,000 to keep the county’s middle-school sports programs from being chopped out of existence in a single drastic budget cut.

According to the Associated Press and Charlotte Observer, the city cut $1.25 million — the entire budget for middle-school sports — in an effort to get the school district’s funding in line with budget projections. The public school district also instituted new rules that call for middle-school students to pay $50 to participate in each school sports and high school athletes to pay $100 to play. The Observer reported that those fees would be waived for students who participate in the free or reduced-cost lunch programs, a group that comprises more than half of the students attending Charlotte public schools. From The Observer:

“We investigated the situation. We looked for ways to help middle schools and this was one of the options presented to us. We took it because of the impact on middle schools and giving them the opportunity to play sports and as motivation for education as well,” Jordan said.

Jordan and his Charlotte Bobcats aren’t the only donor to step forward and help CMS middle-school sports, but he’s by far the largest. By comparison, the Charlotte Touchdown Club, an organization that included funding from the Carolina Panthers and the NFL Players Association in its pledge, donated $56,000.

Stafon Johnson, the Tennessee Titans rookie who was badly injured in a weightlifting accident at USC last year, suffered a major ankle injury Saturday night in his first NFL preseason game.

Johnson was carted off the field in Seattle with a dislocated right ankle and is likely to miss the entire 2010 season.

“Bouncing back from trials and tribulations, this is just a bump in the road,” Johnson said after the game. “God has brought me back this far, and it felt good to be where I’d gotten to. This is minimum compared to what I have been through, really.”

In September Johnson dropped a barbell on his throat while bench pressing in the USC weight room, causing him to be hospitalized for three weeks. The injury ended his college football career, but he signed with the Titans as an undrafted free agent.

Now the ankle injury will apparently end his rookie year. Johnson’s Titans teammates gathered around him as he was being attended to on the field, and both Titans coach Jeff Fisher and Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, who coached Johnson at USC, spoke of him in glowing terms after the game, saying that if anyone can come back from a setback like this, it’s Johnson.

“I appreciate the love and support,” Johnson said. “I am just a regular guy trying to make it like everybody else. I’m just going to try and get back as soon as I can.’

Stafon Johnson | Running Back

Titans rookie RB Stafon Johnson was carted off the field late in Saturday’s preseason opener with what is believed to be a dislocated right ankle.

Johnson got up from a tackle only to see his foot twisted to the wrong side of his body. He’s the USC RB that battled back from a life-threatening weight room accident last season. His former coach Pete Carroll joined him at the cart in a touching moment before he was taken to the locker room. The hard-luck rookie’s season is undoubtedly over.

Michael Vick – The most famous student of the mentor Tony Dungy and the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback is on probation after serving an 18-month federal prison sentence that ended in May 2009 for dogfighting.

Vick hosted a birthday party that ended with a shooting June 25 in Virginia Beach, Va.

According to police in Virginia Beach, Vick was not present when a person was shot. Vick’s attorney, Larry Woodward, identified the victim as Quanis Phillips, a co-defendant in the dogfighting ring.

“Tony Dungy can go somewhere and if something happens, I’m not going to get singled out,” Dungy said. “Michael Vick goes some place and the same thing happens, and you’re the center of attention. You’re the focus. Now is it fair? Who knows?

“But that’s the bed you’ve made and you’ve got to sleep in it and be prepared for that. That’s the lesson he’s learned.”

Cushing blames positive test on overtraining

Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing adjusting his chinstrap

The Houston Texans asked the NFL to reduce or rescind the four-game suspension given to star linebacker Brian Cushing on Monday, saying he has a unique medical condition stemming from something called overtrained athlete syndrome.

Cushing described the condition after Monday morning’s practice. He said the syndrome can trigger hormonal spikes after breaks in training, explaining why he would have tested positive for a fertility drug last September — a drug he said he never took.

“I think that’s the final diagnosis we came up with,” he said, “and a lot of doctors have supported why this has happened.”

Texans owner Bob McNair met with commissioner Roger Goodell in New York to plead his case. The league denied Cushing’s appeal of the suspension in February.

“I did meet with Bob at his request,” Goodell said Monday during a previously scheduled conference call with Texans season ticket holders. “I’m trying to get all the facts correct, so we make sure we are making the right decision.”
